| Route Notes | The plan was for this team to scale the West Ridge from the Nepalese side in association with David Hahn's team on the South Col to replicate the two segments of the 1963 American Everest expedition's historic traverse. The team had pitched C2 on 17 April and returned to it on the 23rd to begin their attempt to get onto the West Shoulder, go into the Hornbein Couloir on the North Face and rejoin the ridge to the top. On 24 April they began to establish the route onto the shoulder straight up from C2 at 6400m in the Western Cwm. The four-man team worked in different rotations of members, progressing very slowly because their route lay over blue ice covered by a thin layer of snow. They had no Sherpas with them above C2 and themselves fixed 600m of rope onto the shoulder. Bishop and Mace reached 7200m on May 17, and on the 19th Morton and Norton got to 7300m, just below the crest of the shoulder. This was the group's high point. They now decided the climb was over: it would take them another month to scale the West Ridge and the Hornbein Couloir, and they knew that the ladders in the Khumbu Icefall, through which they would have to descend, would be removed about the end of May. |
