| Route Notes | Summit on 18 May by Steck and Tenzing Sherpa at 1:30-2 pm. Steck took 2 hours 37 minutes from BC to C2. On 17 May during the summit attempt, they did not stay at C3 but went straight to C4. This was lucky as that evening a huge ice block came down and destroyed many tents at C3. They would have been hit by the ice avalanche. Tenzing and Steck left C4 at 12:30 am. They were climbing behind the rope fixing Sherpas. They caught up with the Sherpas at the Balcony. Weather was clear and only slightly windy. They waited for about 40 minutes at the Hillary Step for the Sherpas to fix the rope. They stayed about 10 minutes on the summit, then descended to C4, Steck arrived at 4:15 pm and Tenzing at 6:30 pm. The following day they descended to BC. Steck flew to Lukla by helicopter on 20 May. Oxygen: not taken, not used. Sherpas: Tenzing Sherpa, Sanam, Gudel-4, 7/3/92, 1st 8000er |
