| Route Notes | The Asian Trekking Eco Everest expedition was a combination of several independent teams (1-4 climbers each). Asian Trekking provided transportation, base camp facilities and various levels of high altitude support (oxygen, high-altitude porters, tents, etc) as required and contracted for by each team. The individual accounts for each team are given below: Naim Logic (USA/Bosnia-Herzegovina) Name: None Camps: BC(17/04,5350m),C1(23/04,6000m),C2(24/04,6500m),C3(17/05,7300m), C4(18/05,8000m),Smt(19/05) Left: 22/05/2012 Hired: 2 Term: Success Summit team left C4 at 9:15 pm. The crowds were bad and progress was slow. They stayed about 20 minutes on the summit. On his way down he bumped into Dr. Eberhard Schaaf, the German who later died. Schaaf was on his way up and seemed Ok. Logic had to wait for about two hours at the Hillary Step. On his way down below the balcony, Logic was hit by a large rock into his ribs. He managed to stop it but he thinks he broke a rib. Arita was also hit and hurt his knee. They descended to C4 where they arrived at 4:30 pm. On 21 May they descended to C2 and the following day BC. He left BC on 22 May and walked to Lukla. Oxygen: Taken and used from C2 to top and to 6800m by Logic. Taken and used from C4 to top to C4 by Sherpas. Sherpas: Arita, Thami, 1959 Nima Kancha, Khumjung, Khumbu, 15/5/1980 Randolph Allen (USA) Name: None Camps: BC(18/04,5350m),C1(25/04,6130m),C2(26/04,6470m),xxx(26/04,6470m) Left: 20/05/2012 Hired: 1 Term: Abandoned at 6470m due to family sickness Allen and Pasang Namgyal did their first acclimatization rotation when they reached C2. Afterwards they descended to Pheriche to recover. When he got back to BC he found that his mother was diagnosed with cancer [and returned home]. Sherpa: Pasang Namgyal, Khumjung, 25/11/72 Carsten Pedersen (Denmark) Name: None Camps: BC(28/04,5350m),xxx(07/05,6000m) Left: 11/05/2012 Hired: 1 Term: Abandoned at 6000m due to bad conditions on mountain Team left BC at 5:30 on 7 May. They were going through Icefall to reach 6000m and were not intending to stay at C1. Pedersen based his decision to leave on Brice's decision to cancel his expedition. Pedersen had started from Lukla on 6 April. He felt very sick with flu and flew by helicopter out of Lobuche on 14 April. He flew to Kathmandu and stayed there for 12 days in Hotel Malla. On 26 April he flew to Lukla, trekked to Namche and helicoptered to BC on 28 April. Sherpa: Pasang Rita, Yilajung, Khumbu, 17/7/74, Everest X8 Vit Morava (Canada) Jan Morava (Czech Republic) Name: None Camps: BC(16/04,5350m),C1(30/04,6000m),C2(05/05,6500m),C3(06/05,7000m), C4(18/05,8000m),Smt(19/05) Left: 23/05/2012 Hired: 3 Term: Success Summit on 19 May by Jan and Vit Morava, Naga, Pasang Tharke and Pasang Rita at 11.35 am. Team left C4 at 8:30 pm on 18 May. The progress was slow about 1-1/2 hour wait at the Hillary Step. They spent about 20 minutes on the summit. They descended to C4 where they arrived at 7 pm. On 20 May they descended to C2 and 21 May. Oxygen: Taken and used from C3 to top to C3 by members. From C4 to top to C4 by Sherpas. On 18 May Thelen and Schaaf ascended to C4. Thelen was too tired to leave the same night so he decided not to go, but try for the summit on 20 May. The summit team left C4 at 8:30 pm on 18 May. According to Pemba Tshering, Schaaf was already a bit confused on his way up. He did not follow Pemba's order anymore and was talking to him in German. After they had reached the summit, they stayed for about an hour. Schaaf took off his oxygen mask quite frequently up there. On the descent (Pasang Temba had gone ahead), Pemba and Schaaf were stuck for a long time at the Hillary Step, which Thelen thinks could have exacerbated Schaaf's oncoming HACE. When they had descended the Hillary Step, Schaaf had gone blind and all of a sudden he threw his body back and collapsed. Pemba thought he was first unconscious and then died at about 3 pm. While Pemba descended to C4, base camp manager Dawa Steven sent more Sherpas to retrieve the body, but it was too windy and they turned back. On 20 May Thelen, Karsang (Thelen's Sherpa) and Pemba descended to C2, from where Thelen rang Schaaf's family to tell them about the death. On 21 May they descended to BC and on 22 May left BC. Oxygen: Taken and used from C2 to top to Hillary Step (point of death) by Schaaf. From C3 to top to C4 by Pemba. From C2 to C4 to C3 by Thelen and Karsang Sherpa. Sherpas: Pemba Tshering (Maila), Khumjung, 06/08/86 Pasang Temba, Thami, 27/01/1970, Everest X4 Karsang, Pare, Namche-8, 29/5/1963, Everest X1 William Burke (USA) Name: None Camps: BC(13/04,5350m),C1(20/04,6000m),C2(21/04,6400m),xxx(22/04,6700m) Left: 08/05/2012 Hired: 1 Term: Abandoned at 6700m due to Brice cancelling, wanted to go to North Burke went to the bergschrund on acclimation rotation. When he heard about Brice's decision to pull out, he abandoned his climb as he still wanted to go to north side. Sherpa: Gyaluk Sherpa, 5/1/2032, Patle-5, Everest X3, Cho Oyu X1, Manaslu X1 Nandini Cholaraju (India) Name: None Camps: BC(12/04,5350m),C1(24/04,6000m),C2(25/04,6400m),C3(24/05,7300m), C4(25/05,8000m),xxx(25/05) Left: 28/05/2012 Hired: 1 Term: Abandoned at 8000m due to agency did not let her go to summit (said she was too slow) Cholaraju took about 9-1/2 hours from C3 to C4. She arrived at C4 at 3 pm. Ang Phurba and she got ready to leave for the summit at 8 pm, however, the base camp manager (Dawa Steven) told her that she could not go as she had been too slow. According to Dawa Steven she also took nine hours from BC to C2. Cholaraju was very upset about and it was checking with other agencies whether they had a Sherpa for her but could not find anyone. She was very unhappy about this decision as she thought that it had been unfair and that she had been well and fit enough. She stayed at C4 until the next morning and descended to C2 on 26 May. She descended to BC 27 May. She did not talk to anybody there, packed her bags and left BC the following day, 28 May. Oxygen: Taken and used from C2 to C4 to C2 by Cholaraju. Sherpa: Nima Kancha, Pare, Namche-9, Khumbu, 20/4/1977, Everest X3 Gia Tortladze (Georgia) Name: Georgia Without Occupation Everest Expedition Camps: BC(13/04,5200m),C1(19/04,6000m),C2(20/04,6400m),C3(17/05,7100m), C4(18/05,7950m),Smt(19/05) Left: 24/05/2012 Hired: 1 Term: Success Tortladze and Kami Tshering Sherpa started their summit push from C4 at 8 pm on 18 May. They got to the top at 10:45 am on 19 May. They stayed on summit between 15 to 20 minutes. On their descent storm started picking up and it was very bad. At around 8200m Tortladze saw ahead of him something rolling down about 60-70m and it stopped. He thought that they may be a rock fall. When he reached the place what earlier he thought was a rock that turned out to be a Polish woman climber who was crying for help. She was frantically repeating "I am dying". Tortladze calmed her down and assured her saying that everything will be Ok in Russian language. After a while two Sherpas came up to help her and one more Sherpa joined them a little later. Sherpas gave her oxygen and took her down. After that Tortladze did not meet her. Tortladze was exhausted, the weather was stormy and he ran out of oxygen. He remained there sleeping. On 20 May before 6 am Tortladze heard an American climber was asking if he still alive by shaking his shoulder. Then he woke up and started moving towards C4. On the way down a little far away he was lucky to find a used oxygen cylinder which helped him to get down to C4 where he arrived at about 6 am. When he took off his down suit his chest was full of snow/ice which might have got inside his suit as the upper part of jacket covering neck was not fully zipped due to oxygen mask. Tortladze himself was surprised about it. He said it is unbelievable that he survived staying out in open such a long time in the storm without oxygen. Tortladze slept at C4 for three hours then continued to C2 and slept there. Next day 21 May he got to BC.
