| Route Notes | C4 at South Col. Both members and Phu Dorje left C4 at 9:00 pm on 20 May, got to the top at 8:15 am on 21 May and stayed on summit for 45 minutes. The tandem paragliding flight took off at 9:00 am. Highest altitude gained on flight was 8865m, first to gain height above summit on free flight (i.e., not powered flight). Sunuwar piloted the flight and Lhakpa Tshering was the passenger. They landed at Syangboche. Duration of flight was one hour, longest flight from summit of Everest. Phu Dorje descended to BC by foot clear camp. Sunuwar used oxygen from C3 and during the flight, Lhakpa used none. From Syangboche, the two members trekked to Lukla and in early June, they continued downwards in a kayak on the Kosi River to the Ganges, Kolkata (Calcutta) and the Bay of Bengal. They named their expedition the Ultimate Descent Summit to Sea. Sherpa helpers: Phu Dorje Sherpa (Ang Bhai), 25/1/84, Choplung, Chaurikharka-3, no 8000ers Ngima Ongchu, Surke, Chaurikharka-4, Solu, no 8000ers [Note: The Ultimate Descent website states that two Sherpa helpers went to the summit, Phu Dorje carrying oxygen and Nima Wangchu carrying the glider.] |
