| Route Notes | Hoglin arrived at C3 on 20 May at 8350m, set up his tent there and rested. Then he left for the summit at midnight. He turned back at 8460m at 1:30 am on the 21st in good weather conditions, but with a cold wind blowing. He turned back because he was having difficulty breathing. "I had a bad cough and when I did cough, my lungs would burn; that may have also made it hard for me to breathe. I'm very happy to have made it down without any other problems," he wrote in an email. He descended all the way to ABC that day. This was "my second time trying Everest without using bottled oxygen, and I have to say it definetely is a challenge. For me, all in all, it was a good climb even so not reaching the summit. I can't say if I would give it another try. Time will tell!" |
