| Route Notes | The two-member team, Dave Morton and Melissa Arnot, arrived at Everest BC on 24 May by helicopter from their BC at Makalu after an unsuccessful bid to scale it. They left C2 at 4:00 am on 29 May to move up to C4 intending to leave for the top at 2:00 am. But they turned back at 3:00 pm at 7880m just below the site for C4 and returned to C2 at 6:30 pm, descended to BC on the 30th and left the next day in a helicopter that took them to Lukla and then a plane to Kathmandu. Morton explained shortly after returning to Kathmandu that he had turned back because he was not sufficiently rested, but in fact he probably had developed pneumonia during the summit push they had made on Makalu without realizing that the bad cough he had at the time was due to this. Melissa was diagnosed in Kathmandu as having pneumonia; Morton was x-rayed at the same hospital later and told he was recovering from the disease. Arnot used oxygen from 7300m and Morton from 7600m to their high point and back to C2. |
