Route Notes Batard hoped to set a speed record for climbing Everest from Tibet, as he had done on the Nepalese side in 1988. He had come to Everest in the spring of 2009 and found that he still could move very fast. Now he was back with eight other members, five of them intended to climb high. They spent three nights together in France at 3600m above Chamonix, flew from Geneva to Lhasa, which is also at 3600m, stayed there for three nights, two nights in Gyantse and one night in Shigatse before arriving at Chinese BC at 5000m on 5 May. They moved up to an interim camp at 5800m on 9 May, and all were in ABC on 11 May. Batard was the first to go to C1: he moved alone to C1 (7150m) at the North Col on the 13th, stayed for two nights, climbed to 7500m to acclimatize on the 15th and went back to ABC the same day. He descended to BC on the 17th to see Roux, who was sick, then on the 19th returned to ABC, where he joined Lhakpa Norbu, who had been with Laborde. On 21 May at 2:00 pm Batard started his speed ascent with Lhakpa Norbu. They reached C1 in two and a half hours, stayed there for 30 minutes and moved on up. At 7300m, Batard started vomiting. They continued up to 7600m at about 8:00 pm, when Batard's stomach trouble forced him to give up. He told Lhakpa Norbu that he should go on to the summit. Batard returned to ABC at midnight. Lhakpa Norbu turned back at C2 (7700m); he said the reason was that his down jacket was too light, but Batard thinks he did not want to continue alone. Batard made no further attempt to scale the mountain and remained in ABC until the climb was over; he said he would not come back and try a speed climb again. Faivre managed to get to fifty meters below the summit before he became too tired to continue. He and Nima Dorje climbed to C1 on 21 May, rested there for two hours, then went directly from there to the 8800m high ledge just below the top on 22 May. Lamoureux reached 8000m on 23 May with Pasang Temba. The climb up to C2 to 7700m had been very difficult for her, and she now decided to abandon her summit attempt. Defrade got to 7600m before he became very tired and his fingers were getting cold. He turned back here. Bremond climbed to C2 with Lamoureux, then gave up. Laborde on 19 May got to only 5700m, got sick, went down to BC and left the expedition. Non-climbing members: Cyprien and Guillemard intended to go to the North Col only, but actually got no higher than ABC. Roux went only to ABC as planned, got sick and went down to BC. Oxygen was used by Faivre and Nima Dorje from C1 to their high point (8800m) and down to C2. Laborde was on oxygen from C2 to 8000m to C2. Lamoureux used none. Sherpas: Lhakpa Norbu, 14/2/83, Tashigaon, Makalu-5, Everest 18/5/06 Nima Dorje/Ngima Dorchi, 7/10/80, Tumlingtar, Makalu-5, Everest X2 Pasang Temba, 20/1/83, Tashigaon-5, Everest 18/5/06
