| Route Notes | BC at CBC, IC on 23 April at 5800m. Frank Ziebarth was on Everest North side climbing without oxygen and without Sherpa. According to email (dated 27 Aug) of Alexander Pare (from Canada) who was on the Everest north side, the summit push of Ziebarth started on 16 May BC, 17 ABC, 18 C1, 19 C2, 20 C3. Pare said at a meeting on return from Everest that Ziebarth started at 1 am (NST) from C3 on 21 May and Pare followed him. Pare said that Ziebarth was a fast climber. Apparently, Ziebarth summited on 21 May. Pare turned around from the bottom of 2nd Step (8600m) due to fatigue and malfunctioning of supply system of his oxygen. He waited for Ziebarth at C2 but he did not return. He was found dead sitting (as if he was resting) at the bottom of the Third Step. Pare said that at least three other climbers offered oxygen to Ziebarth considering his bad condition but he refused to use it. Pierre Schwinte, member of French team, had mentioned to other climbers that he saw Ziebarth crawling up to the summit. Schwinte was the last one to see Ziebarth. Email from Pierre Schwinte of Ludovic Challeat French Expedition - 30 Aug 2009 I was actually the last guy who saw Frank alive. Before all, he reached the summit. I saw him beside the Buddha statue when I was climbing the last fifty meters (I was the very last climber of this day). It should be 12 hours 45 minutes, the 21st of May. We were absolutely alone. We passed each other 20m under the summit. He was without Sherpa, and without oxygen. He looked very tired. He has a steady gait but was making a break frequently on the ground for resting and taking air. He looked also very concentrated and didn't reply to me when I proposed him to go down together (I was also alone, my bottle of oxygen was empty and I was exhausted). I met him again as I was going down, just above the Third Step. It should be 2 pm (perhaps a little bit more). Once again, he looked exhausted, making some steps and stopping for rest. When I reached him, I proposed him a bottle of oxygen I found at the summit. He did not reply to me but he rejected my suggestion by giving me a sign with his hand to pass. Perhaps he thought he could continue without any help to succeed in climbing Everest alone and without oxygen. I never managed to see him during the way down. I reached the Camp 3 at 8:30 pm and I have been taken in by some Sherpas of another team. I told them that there was another guy upstairs. They left the C3 for the summit at 9 pm. His friend Alex waited for him the next morning at C3. We heard that Frank was found dead in the afternoon. Email from Alexandre Pare - 27 Aug 2009 16 BC 17 ABC 18 C1 19 C2 20 C3 21 summit and death. Email from Alexandre Pare - 28 Aug 2009 The camp altitude are the same as with us. I actually was with Frank at all camps during summit push, except at ABC (me and JP stayed at Middle Camp instead of ABC on the 17th). Concerning the first times: Frank made it to BC by bus the same day as us. He went up to middle camp, 2 days prior to us, but did not sleep there. He went up to sleep at middle camp the same day as us. He went up to ABC one day later (he slept one night at middle camp only - where we would sleep 3 nights). I don't remember when he went first to C1, but it certainly was before us. He made it once close to C2 before the summit push, but did not sleep there. I don't remember the date. His first time at C3 was with me. Anna Baranska - 31 Aug 2009 Frank appeared in C1 on 27 April, 12 May and 18 May (on the summit push). On 13 May he turned down as he did not feel well, I went to C2. C2 he reached on 19 May, C3 on 20 May. |
