Route Notes Five foreign members, one Sherpa member and nine hired Sherpas left C4 for the summit on 18 May in the expedition's only summit bid. They were Bennike, Fulton, Hamilton, Johanson, Kedev, Chuldim Sherpa, Pasang Tenzing, Phu Tshering, Dawa Jangbu, Sange Dorje, Temba Sherpa, Pemba Chhoti, Pasang Bhote, Kul Bahadur Magar and Nawang Chhangba. They left the camp at 9:00 pm on the 18th and were on the top at various time between 3:00 and 9:00 am on 1 May. They returned to C4 that day, descended to C2 on the 20th and to BC on the 21st. The summit members used oxygen in C3 to the top to C3. The summit Sherpas used it in C4 to the top to C4. Non-summiting climbing members: Chaplin got to C2 on 21 April, but soon abandoned the climb and left on the 26th. He was homesick. Irani also reached C2 on 21 April and left on the 26th because of business commitments. The only serious health problem of anyone on the expedition was the injuries received by Chuldim Sherpa. He went to C4, and in his descent to BC on 21 May, he fell into a crevasse near the top of the Icefall. He fractured eight ribs and suffered a "compression fracture of the vertebral body."
