| Route Notes | C1 at North Col High point at C3. The team attempted Annapurna I in April, then tried to scale Everest in May-June. Neither attempt was successful. They were five members on Annapurna, but two (Behun and Radim) had to return to the Czech Republic, leaving Masek, Uher and Valchar to try to try to climb Everest. But Valchar left soon, leaving just two: Valchar reached ABC on 4 May with his teammates but developed pulmonary edema, left ABC on the 6th and BC on the 9th to return to Kathmandu and go home. Meanwhile on the 6th, Uher and Masek climbed to the North Col and pitched C1 there on an acclimatization climb. They stayed two nights, then descended to ABC and BC on the 8th to rests. On the 14th they returned to ABC; on the 16th to C1; on the 17th they went up to 7700m and made C2; and on the 19th they went back to ABC; this also had been an acclimatization climb, which, they felt they needed since they had brought oxygen for medical use only, not for climbing or sleeping. They went down to BC on the 22nd to rest. Two days later they were back in ABC, ready for their push to reach the summit on the 28th. But bad weather (wind and snowfall) intervened, and they waited at ABC for it to improve. They started up again on the 30th and reached 6700m, where they had earlier left a cache of high altitude equipment. The cache was gone (stolen by someone, they believe), so on the the 31st they returned to ABC. Here they borrowed some equipment for Masek from the Canadians led by Gabriel Filippi, and Uher used items left by Valchar when he went home. On 2 June they went once again to C1, pulling fixed ropes out from under deep snow, while the two Canadians and a Peruvian (Hidalgo) waited a couple hours and then followed them, the Czechs claimed. On the 3rd Uher and Masek returned to C2 and on the 4th pitched their last camp C3 at 8300m. But again snow and low clouds halted their progress, and on the 5th they descended to ABC. Now they were very tired, having struggled for a month without Sherpa helpers or bottled oxygen. They went back down to BC on the 6th, decided on the 7th to abandon the climb and left BC on the 8th to return to Kathmandu. |
