Route Notes Mountain Professionals Everest Expedition 2008 ,led by Ryan Water - 4 June 2008 The expedition's first summit bid started from C4 at 8:00 pm on 20th May. Its members were Arnette, Barrett, Kress, Murray, Waters, Phurba Temba, Tshering Wangchu, Lama Babu and Nima Dorje Tamang. Arnette and Lama Babu turned back from the Balcony (about 8500m) at midnight of the 20th/21st because Arnette was slow and very tired; they descended to C2 on the 21st. Waters turned around alone at 8600m, where his oxygen regulator started to malfunction, and went to C4. The remaining three members (Barrett, Kress and Murray) and three Nepalis (Phurba Temba, Tshering Wangchu and Nima Dorje Tamang) went on to reach the summit at 7:35 (the Nepalis), 7:45 (Murray), and 8:00 am (Barrett and Kress) on 21 May. They returned to C4 between 1:00 and 2:30 pm and stayed there for the night. Waters made a second bid for the top. He left C4 alone at 8:40 pm on the 21st, reached the summit at 8:30 am on 22 May and returned to C4 at 3:00 pm. Here he realized that his right big toe was frostbitten and other toes were frostnipped, but all will heal. On the 23rd he descended to C2 and on the 24th to BC. Oxygen was used by all members except Waters climbing from C3, to and in C4 to their high points, to and in C4, to C3. Waters started using it halfway to C4 and continued on it in C4 to his high point and then to the summit, and down all the way to C2. The Sherpas used it in C4 to their high points to C4.
