| Route Notes | C2 in Western Cwm C3 on Lhotse Face C4 at South Col. Everest Guide Expedition, led by Atsushi Yamamoto - 1 June 2008 Expedition arrived at BC on 1 May, and Nepalese staff were the first amongst them to sleep in C2, which they did on 9 May, not making any C1 at the top of the Icefall. But the Japanese climbers made a C1 at 6000m on 20 May. They continued up in this summit push, occupying C3 at 7250m on 22 May and C4 on 23 May. On 24 May Fujimori, Kadoya, Kato, Masuda, Matsuura, Phurba Chhiri Sherpa and Hari Bahadur Chaulagain left C4 at 2:00 am Matsuura got to 8100m, then turned back because he was climbing too slowly, went to C4 to wait for the others, all of whom went to the summit the same day, 24 May. The summiters returned to C4 at 5:30 pm, and the whole party, including Matsuura, descended the next day: Kato and Matsuura spent the night in C2 while the other Japanese and the two Nepalese went to BC. On the 24th, Yamamoto had gone up to C2 to meet Matsuura, who was extremely tired. Yamamoto met him at 7300m on 25th and escorted him down to C2. All members were in BC on the 26th. They left BC on the 28th and took a helicopter from Syangboche to Kathmandu on 30 May. Other non-summiting members: Funahashi reached 7000m, but she was very slow and there was new snowfall; she descended to C1 with Yamamoto. She had become snowblind while going down from C2 to C1 and had had to stay in C1 an extra day to recover. Shiga, the expedition doctor, stayed in BC. Yamamoto's high point was 7300m in his climb up to help Matsuura. Members used oxygen sleeping in C1 and C2, then climbing and sleeping above C2 to their high points to and in C4. The two Nepalese used it sleeping in C4 to high points to and perhaps in C4 on descent. Nepali climbers: Hari Bahadur Chaulagain, 25/12/71 (10/9/2028), Makalu-2, no 8000ers before, but climbed frequently on lower mountains with Tamotsu Ohnishi Phurba Chhiri Sherpa, 4/10/68 (19/6/2025), Kurima, Lokhim-9, Solu, Everest X4, Lhotse X2, Manaslu X2, Cho Oyu X2 |
