| Route Notes | Peak Freaks Everest Expedition, led by Tim Rippel - 30 May 2008 The team in their summit push slept in C3 on 18 May, climbed to C4 on 20 May, and left C4 between 10:00 and 10:30 pm of the 20th for the top. They were Gilbert with Kaji, Williams with Karma, Mortensen with Lhakpa Bhote, LaMoureaux with Jangbu, Rippel with Gyalzen, Alzuman with Mingmar, and Al Ismaili with Ngima Dendi. The summit was reached by Gilbert and Kaji at 7:00 am on 21 May, by Williams and Karma at 11:30 am, by Mortensen and Lhakpa Bhote at 11:45 am, by Rippel, LaMoureaux, Gyalzen, Jangbu and Ang Pasang (who was carrying spare oxygen bottles) at 1:00-1:10 pm, and Alzuman and Mingmar at 3:00 pm. The summit day's weather was clear, warm and no wind. All the summiters returned to C4 for the night. On the 22nd, all were in C2 except Rippel and LaMoureaux, who stayed in C3, and all of them were in BC by the 24th. Al Ismaili turned around at the South Summit at 2:00 pm because of dehydration and extreme exhaustion, and Ngima Dendi went with him. When Rippel was on the summit, he received a radio call from Al Ismaili asking for water; Rippel told him to descend and Rippel would catch up with him. Rippel met him just below the South Summit and Rippel helped him to go down, sometimes dragging him and several Sherpas roping him. They got him to 100m above C4 and left him there in a sleeping bag after he had been given more oxygen, water and medication; he was ready to go to sleep. They left him for two to three hours, then Sherpas from the Indian expedition led by Ashok Abbey (actually Indian Sherpa members) saw him moving and brought him into camp. He was able to walk to C3 for the night. Oxygen used by all members from C3 on 20 May to their high points to C3. Sherpas used it in C4 to top to C4. Two members left early: Lodey went into the Icefall on 13 May, had "lead legs," turned around at C1 and left the team on 14 May. Naseer slipped on a ladder in the Icefall and suffered a stress fracture in mid-shin on 9 May, slept in C1 that night, went down to BC on the 10th, and on the 12th left BC with a Sherpa to Lukla; descended from Namche to Lukla in just four hours. He said he would get an X-ray and return to BC for a speed ascent of Everest, but he never came back. Sherpas: Ang Pasang Sherpa, 5/11/70 (20/7/2027), Waku-4, Solu Gyalzen Sherpa, 19/4/84 (7/1/2041), Bakachol-9, Khotang, no 8000ers Jangbu Sherpa, 18/6/65 (4/3/2022), Bakachol-9, Khotang, Everest X3 Kaji Sherpa, 12/2/87 (29/10/2043), Sikli, Jubing-9, Solu Karma Sherpa, 7/7/76, Sotang-6, Solu, Cho Oyu 5/5/07 Lhakpa Bhote, 5/11/70, Hatiya-3, Sankhuwasabha, Everest 21/5/07 Mingmar Sherpa, 22/7/70 (7/4/2027), Jantarkhani-9, Okhaldhunga, Everest 20/4/07 Ngima Dendi, aka Nima Dendi/Ang Dendi, Dendi 25/5/74, Bakachol-9 Khotang, Everest 19/5/07 |
