Route Notes Entire team left C3 at 9:00 pm on 19 May for summit. Steve turned back at 8400m at about midnight and Mike, Jim Gile and both Sherpas at 8600m at about 1:30 am on 20 May. They gave up because they were not using oxygen and the members wore ski boots, so their feet had gotten too cold to continue the climb. The three members descended to C2 on the 20th and on the 21st skied from C2 to the moraine of ABC. Both Sherpas descended to ABC on the 20th. Sherpas: Karma, 7/7/76, Sotang, Solu, no 8000ers Pemba Norbu, 12/6/78, Lelep, Taplejung, no 8000ers Kari Kobler - 28 May 2007 The three-member team of Mike Marolt, his twin brother Steve, and Jim Gile went first to Cho Oyu and from there directly to Everest. They had two Sherpas with them on Cho Oyu. They arrived at their Cho Oyu BC on 19 April. On about 10 May they went for the summit; Gile and Mike Marolt stopped at 8100m, but Steve went to the summit with Norbu and Karma Sherpas. The three members then skied down the mountain to C1, Steve from the summit and the others from 8100m. They went immediately to Everest and arrived at BC on 14 May. They now had three Sherpas with them: Norbu and Karma from their Cho Oyu climb, and Mingma from Kobler's Everest climb. The Americans moved up the mountain as follows: ABC - 16 May C1 - 17 May, down to ABC on about 18 May C2 - 19 May at 7800m C3 - 20 May at 8300m On 21 May they left C3 for the summit, but they turned back at 8500m. They had climbed without any oxygen; now they were cold and very tired, and they descended to C2. On 22 May the three members skied from C2 to 6600m. Mitenjen (Mingma) Sherpa, Nurbugaon, Makalu-Barun, 30/07/1969 (to 8300m with Steve Marolt?)
