| Route Notes | BC at CBC/IC on 21 April at 5800m C1 at North Col. On 20th May Adrian Crane left C1 at about 3:30 am/NST reached deposit point at 7500m at 8:30 am and picked up a fresh bottle of oxygen. He found that two bottles of oxygen bottles were missing from the place. Soon after, Christopher (younger son) at ABC called on the radio to say that all the reports of Pierangelo Maurizio were in fact Marco Epis and that Pierangelo was missing and presumed dead while descending from the summit. There was no need for Crane to look for Pierangelo in C2. Crane said that on 19 May while resting at C1 after returning from the deposit point with Jonathan (elder son) in a strong snow storm and in white-out, about mid-afternoon, three women, one Italian and two French, stopped by their tent and asked to use their radio. The women were trying to contact ABC to ask about an Italian man and possible to get some Sherpas to come up to try and assist him in descending the mountain. Since Crane's radios were a different frequency to theirs, Christopher (who was still in ABC) was called to go up and down ABC checking if anyone had heard from Pierangelo Maurizio. Crane said that they received conflicting reports about Pierangelo and another Italian "Marco" who was slowly descending in a bad way from the summit. Pierangelo and Marco were just two of several climbers that Crane saw or heard of who were suffering greatly from altitude and were attempting to escape from the mountain with their health or their life. Crane climbed through C2, met two of his collegues from the Dutch expedition, and climbed to 8150m where he arrived at 12:45 pm. He saw a small flat area and he unhooked from the fixed rope and sat and look at the view. He was comfortable, physically well and no altitude problem. While sitting there, he reflected on the sad stories that he had seen and heard as he climbed to that point. He counted his blessings as a father, husband and friend. Then he decided that he would indeed honor his personal pledge to touch 8000m and descend. He took a lot of pictures, gave encouragement to Dutch friends who went on to summit and began his descent between 1:15 pm and 1:30 pm, picked up cache at 7500m, and arrived at North Col between 4-4:15 pm where Jonathan was waiting from him. Both father and son left North Col at 5 pm arrived at ABC around 8 pm. Crane said that it had been a great experience to reach 8000m; it had been a sad experience to see the toll that the mountain could take; it had been a great experience to return to Jonathan in North Col and Christopher in ABC. Castle climbed up to 6700m on 25 April. He left CBC on 1 May due to the news that his wife had some medical problem. He may have left Kathmandu on 12 May. Jonathan climbed up to 7500m on 18 May to put the load there and returned together to C1. Christopher did not intend to climb, but did make one trip to the N Col. The team returned to Kathmandu on 27 May and will leave on 1 June. |
