Route Notes Dutch Everest expedition led by Werner De Jong, Spring 2007 - 30 May 2007 Expedition divided into two groups: first summit party of Van den Broek, Hof and three Sherpas, and backup party of De Jong and De Vries as safety for other two members: Hof was very nervous, without experience in the Himalaya. Hof climbed without oxygen and wore only shorts, socks and high climbing boots (to just below his knees); his chest was naked. He turned back on 18 May at 7400m because, he told De Jong, his legs were starting to freeze, but De Jong believes Hof was satisfied with the record he had set and felt no need to go higher. So he left the summit party at 7400m and descended to C1 alone and later to ABC alone. (Hof said in Kathmandu that he was completely satisfied with his achievement) Van den Broek and three Sherpas on 18 May established C2 at 7750m and on 19th made C3 at 8200m. At 9:00 pm NST on the 19th they left C3 for the summit, but they got only 20 meters above camp; Van den Broek's oxygen system was not working; Kami Sherpa complained that his oxygen system also was not working, so the four men aborted their summit bid and stayed at C3. Kami descended to ABC on the 20th. Meanwhile the backup party of De Jong, De Vries and three more Sherpas came up from C2 to C3, and the three Dutchmen, De Jong, De Vries and Van den Broek, and five Sherpas left C3 for a summit bid at 9:00 pm on the 20th. Van den Broek started up first; the Sherpas took a long time getting their boots on and making themselves ready to start, and De Jong was also slow to start. De Vries reached the summit at 6:00 am on the 21st with Tenjen Sherpa and descended to C2; Van den Broek and Nurbu Sherpa were on top at 6:30 am and went down to C2. De Jong reached 8450m. Temba, who was with De Jong when they left C3, seemed to disappear but actually went into a Chinese tent because his oxygen failed, leaving De Jong alone for 15 minutes. Nima came up to De Jong at 8450m, but his oxygen failed and he went back down. De Jong had not realized that he too was not receiving oxygen, but he had no strength left so he went down to C3 and C2. Oxygen: De Vries used oxygen from C2 to top to C2. Tenjen and Nurbu from C3 to top; Tenjen used none in descent, but Nurbu used it to C3. De Jong used oxygen from C2 to 8450m and again from C3 to C2. Temba and Nima from C3 to their high points to C3. Sherpas summiters: Nurbu Sherpa, 10/12/1984, Nurbugaon, Makalu, no 8000ers Tenjen/Tenzing Sherpa, 1/1/1975, Nurbugaon, Makalu, Everest X2 Other Sherpas: Kami Sherpa, 29/6/66, Tashigaon, Makalu, Everest X2, Cho Oyu X1 Nima Sherpa, 14/2/77, Nurbugaon, Makalu, Everest 21/5/06 Phurba Ongel Sherpa, 30/7/81, Nurbugaon, Makalu, no 8000ers Temba Sherpa, 24/11/72, Tashigaon, Makalu, Everest spring 2006 Email from Werner De Jong to Miss Hawley - 20 Jan 2007 From April 4th until 11 we will be on the Langtang trekking. April 12 is for relaxing and arranging the rest of the logistics. We will start to travel to Tibet on April 13, but want to arrive on 16 in BC. Wim Hof is the Iceman and is all his life doing experiments with his body in extremely cold situations. He has already several world records. In fact he is trained in what Tibetan Monks train themselves. He can generate his inner body heat to his skin and will not freeze standing hours in ice. He did demonstrate this all over the world. Next week he is going with Discovery Channel to Finland and will run a half marathon above the polorcirkel and only in shorts and with bare feet. This movie will be shown somewhere in the fall. On Everest he will try to do every part of the way up in shorts. Every part will be done one time. So, we will several times go up to camp one, but he will do this only one time in shorts. This is the same with every camp. The higher he get the more spectacular it will be.
Accidents Nothing serious but Nurbu Sherpa slight frostbite
