| Route Notes | 17 May summit team and Julen, Fessler, Nima Tendu and Kobler left C4 at 11 pm on 16 May. Julen, Fessler and Kobler turned back at 8500m at 6 am as Kobler decided it was too late and he thought Julen had a better chance for his traverse the following day. Arnold, Nima Tendu and Namgyal carried on to the summit. The weather was cloudy and it was snowing slightly. After summiting they descended to C4, where they arrived at 6 pm. Kobler and Fessler had already descended to C2 on 17 May as Fessler was slightly altitude sick. Arnold, Namgyal and Nima Tendu descended to BC on 18 May. On 17 May Julen and Da Nima started summit push at 9 pm. They arrived at the summit at 5:20 am Nepali time. They descended via the North Col and arrived at ABC at 11 am Nepali time on 18 May. They were the first team to summit that day. The conditions were good, especially on the north side. They used oxygen until 8300m. Frehner got to 7300m (Kobler could not remember the date), but turned back due to weakness. Holdener got to 8300m on 19 May but turned back due to cold hands and feet. Merat got to C3 on 12 May, but abandoned her climb due to an altitude related eye infection (she had developed a spot in her left eye). Meyer had to leave the expedition in Pangboche; her mother died and she returned home. The team had abandoned idea of a Lhotse attempt altogether on 12 May due to Merat eye infection and lack of enthusiasm by all others. Sherpas: Namgyal, 11/8/71, Lelep-8, Everest X3, Cho Oyu X1 Da Nima, Bhakanje, Solu, 18/06/72, Everest X2 Nima Tendu/Thenduk/Thundu, 31/8/73, Pangboche |
