| Route Notes | Cross was intending to become first diabetic to summit Everest, but Gerry Weber from Austria (Alpine Ascents) summited before him. Weather was clear; there were no other people on the summit. Ang Rita and Cross descended to C4 where they arrived at 9 am; they rested for a while and carried on to C2 where they arrived at 5 pm. Lhakpa stayed at C2 as he was too tired to carry on. Being diabetic did not pose a problem for Cross; he was using an insulin pump the entire time on the mountain. Lhakpa's ascent without oxygen was unintended; he was not inhaling oxygen. Sherpas: Arita Sherpa, Thami, 1959-60 Lhakpa Nuru Sherpa, Phurte, Namche-4, 20/8/71 |
