Route Notes Park Trans-Everest Expedition (spring 2006) - 15 May 2206 Summit party left C3 at 0:30 hours (NST) on 11 May for the top. They were: Hur Young-Man, Lee Hyeong-Mo, Oh Hee-Joon, Oh Young-Hoon, Park Young-Seok, Serap Jangbu, Thendu Dorje, Pasang Tharke, Kama Tshering and Lama Kancha Sherpas. At about 5:00 am. Lama Kancha turned back because of problems with him oxygen mask at the First Step; at about 11:00 am. Hur and Oh Young-Hoon turned back also at the First Step because they were climbing much too slowly. Lee Hyeong-Mo, Oh Hee-Joon, Park, Serap Jangbu, Thendu Dorje, Pasang Tharke and Kama Tshering went to the summit at 11:00 am. The summit party members (except for Park and Serap Jangbu) returned to C3 at 4:00-5:00 pm to sleep there that night. They reached ABC on the 13th, BC on the 15th, and were to leave for Zhangmu on the 16th to return to KTM on the 17th. Meanwhile Park and Serap Jangbu began their traverse down the SE Ridge at 12:30 hours on the 11th. They found that the route above 7300m had not yet been opened so they had to descend without any freshly-installed fixed ropes. They went down from summit to C3 on Lhotse's West Face roped together. The Hillary Step was "very difficult," said Serap Jangbu. Park got one crampon entangled in old rope and hung there for half an hour till he righted himself. They then descended on the left side of the Step (left side to them as they descended) on snow and rock. At the South Col they found deep snow, in places waist deep, elsewhere thigh-deep. They finally reached C3 at 7300m at 2:00 am on the 12th and slept there. Next night they slept in C2 in the Western Cwm because both men were slightly snowblind and very tired. On the 13th they went down to BC and on to Gorakshep to sleep there that night. Two members left expedition early: Choi left on 15 or 16 April because of a headache due to high altitude, and on 25 April Hur [Heo?] left for the same season. These headaches, plus Park's and Serap Jangbu's slight snowblindness, were the team's only health problems. This was the third north-south traverse of Everest. The first was in May 1998 by the massive Japanese-Chinese-Nepalese team. Second was made (without permits) by South Korean Heo Young-Ho and Ngati Sherpa in April 1993. Park and Serap Jangbu were on the permits of teams on north and south sides, and they were the only ones to have to descend from the summit without fixed ropes already in place from top to Col. Summit Sherpas: Serap Jangbu, 25/4/83, Pangboche, Everest X2 Thendorje, aka Thendu Dorje, 22/4/83, Pangboche, Everest X2 Pasang Tharke, 16/3/83, Khunde Kama Chhiring, 9/11/77, Walung village, Makalu-6 Other Sherpas: Lama Kancha, 17/1/74, Khumjung, Everest X1
