Route Notes 1st summit bid by Dougan and Sharp up from C3 22 May at 2:30 NST and Sharp just before 2nd Step (8550m) got (4) badly frostbitten toes because oxygen mask not functioning properly, so back to C2. Dougan got to top of 2nd Step and wind terribly cold and also strong, then back to C2 for night. 23rd May to BC; both men at different speeds and their climb over. Bannon and McGuinness in 2nd Summit bid, had good weather and had no wind on their summit day; left C3 for top 30/31 May midnight and on top about 9:00 am. McGuinness - 6 June 2003 Virtually no wind on top. Left C3 for top 12:30 am 31st NST; on top McGuinness at 7:00 am, Bannon at 8:00 am. McGuinness had carried load including oxygen to C3, working as a Sherpa. Back C2 at 3:00 pm for McGuinness, 5:00 pm Bannon; 1st June in ABC. Oxygen: Dougan from 7900m to 8650m to C2 Sharp from C3 to bottom of Second Step at 8550m intermittently. Bannon from 7800m to C3, in C3 to top and back to C3 but not sleeping there On arrival at BC, Synnott had serious cerebral edema and had to leave expedition immediately. Duggan went no higher than BC and left with Synnott.
