Route Notes C1 at top of Icefall C2 in Western Cwm C3 on Lhotse Face C4 at South Col. Night of 3 May "terrible night" (Mozak) because snowstorm almost destroyed tent and C1 tents destroyed; down to BC on 4 May. In C4 on 20/21 May were Schmitt, Brand, Everts and Nawang Thile; decided on 21st morning with storm brewing at 3:00 am and no summit attempt possible, all of team down to C2, then up on 24th to C3; all except Eberhoefer and any Sherpas. On 25th to C2 all in C2 except Schmitt, who turned back at 7400m because hadn't recovered from hard time he had had at C4 on 21 May and Sherpa. 26th summit party Brand, Evert and Nawang Thile left C4 25th at 9:00; Zwahlen, Rossel, Mrosek, Pemba and Zangbu Sherpa (Pemba=Pemba Chhhoti, Nawang Thile's son) left at 1:15 am of 26th. Those who had left at 9:00 pm: Everts at South Summit 9:00 am of 26th and waited there little more than an hour for Brand and Nawang Thile, who joined him there; Brand developed severe eye problem from strong wind and needed help to return to C3 which they reached at 6:00 pm. Others then summited, went all way to top (Mrosek) had to wait at balcony for others because members had oxygen mask problem). All to summit at 12:45 pm, were alone on top briefly. Last 200m above Hillary Step, wind forced Mrosek had to crowd to top but on top not so bad - 40 minutes from South Summit to top; slept in C2. Oxygen: All used South Col to summit to Col. Everts in C4 Brand in C4 Mrosek in C4 Zwahlin in C4 Rossel in C4 Sherpas in C4 Schmitt from C3 to C4 but not at C4; Brand at C4 and Nawang Thile at C4.
Accidents Eberhoefer developed cerebral edema; Brand severe eye problem from strong wind and needed help to return to C3
