| Route Notes | Both members started from C3 at 01:00 hours Nepal time on 17th. Both reached summit at 11:30 hours. Spent about one hour on the summit. Baeumler returned to C3 at 17:00 hours and Bielefeldt returned to C3 at 19:00 hours. He was late to reach C3 due to exhaustion. Bielefeldt was brought down to ABC on 14th with the help of three Sherpas who were with Egocheaga, Perler and Baeumler. Summit day weather was good but windy. Baeumler and Bielefeldt's Sherpa support was up to C3. The team returned to Kathmandu on 26th and will be leaving on 30th. Dr. Jorge Egocheaga from the same permit of Bielefeldt said that Bielefeldt got cerebral edema and in fact was very sick, close to death. He was lucky to have timely help from the Sherpas. Perler agreed to what Dr. Egocheaga said about Bielefeldt. Perler's helper Krishna Bahadur Tamang sadly said that with all the help evacuating Bielefeldt, he did not even express to them a word of gratitude, not even a thank you. Oxygen: Baeumler used it during summit push from 8000m to top and down to 8300m; Bielefeldt from 7960m to top to ABC. Email to Borislav Dimitrov from Claudia Baeumler - June 4, 2002 My name is Claudia and I accompanied Hartmut during our climb and also the descent from Mt. Everest. Because I had no problems during the descent I can remember very well, where, when and from whom we got the two additionally oxygen bottles which we needed for Hartmut's descent. The first bottle we got from Ang Mingma Sherpa (the Sherpa from Simono Moro) at 8000m (George had in this case asked Ang Mingma for the oxygen by himself). The next oxygen bottle we got on the North Col from the tent of one solo Mexican. During the descent from 7900m (where George and our Sherpa Mingma shared the stormy night with us) down to North Col George was hours in front of us because we were quite slow in the descent. So only our Sherpa Mingma could give word, that we haven't taken any oxygen from your depot. By the way, the bottle, which Mingma brought up when he came to help us, was one emergency bottle (also marked with our name) which we had deposit in our Camp II at 7700m. Maybe George mixed here up something. I'm afraid that one of your oxygen bottles is missing, but we haven't taken it! Email from Borislav Dimitrov - 3 June 2002 I'm Borislav, the leader of the one of International expeditions on the North Ridge. When my team first go up aftert the storm we found one of our oxygen bottles is missing from our depot on 7800m. And George, who is a good friend of us told me, that you take one bottle from a depot as emergency. Ofcourse its correct. But now I'll appreciate, if you agree, I'll give you my account and appreciate. I'm still in KTM and Dawa from the agency gave me your address. |
