Route Notes Put in high camp a month before any other team. Good chance to search since no snowfall in April until about 25 April, then heavy snowfall until about 18 May. From 8200m began search by 5 climbers for 16 days and covered 18 times as much territory in 1999. After this big search, weather deteriorated. Found '22 ABC, 1924 C4 (8100m), 1933 C6, 1960 and 1975 Chinese C6 and C7. Found Norton's sock with name tag; spare Chinese tripod, 1922 crampon. First series of summit attempts: 06 May, aborted [below ABC] by rescue of Chinese glaciologists who were near death from alititude [Norton, Race, Richards]. 14 May to yellow band and deep snow [Hahn, Politz, Race]. 15 May to 7800m and too much snowfalling [Okita, Richards, Eichner, Tanguay]. 19 May was success of Otis and Lafrance with 4 Sherpas. Final Attempt 24 May: Hahn, Tanguay and Richards from 8200m on 24th; left camp at 1:00 am with Phu Dorje and Phu Nuru and got 3rd Step (8700m), but had encountered 3 very sick Russians (altitude and hypothermia) and spent time caring for them and then throughout had chance for top and or to look after two of Brice's members in trouble above and spent more time helping them and lost summit chance: his problem to get them (Lapkass and Guatemalean) to stand up and stay on their feet and needed strenuous help.
