| Route Notes | May 23: Benegas and (late) Mr. Ganner arrived together near South Summit around 09:30 hrs. (They left C4 at 23:30 hours on 22nd). Weather conditions start getting bad - wind, clouds. Benegas told Ganner that he was returning to camp. Ganner told him that he wanted to continue. Benegas got back to his C4 around 12:00 with Sherpa Mingma (Thami). After an hour or two Mingma hurriedly came to his tent and told him that Ganner was dead. Ganner's Sherpa Pincho informed that to BC. That made him worry about Soria Fontan who was trying alone for summit. Because his Sherpa did not show up at the camp, Benegas started asking for help for Fontan and also to know about Ganner. Nobody came to help. His Sherpa and others told him they are very tired. Then he paid $1000 to Pasang Nuru Sherpa to take oxygen to Balcony for Fontan. Fontan told later that nobody came to Balcony with oxgyen. They (Benegas and Fontan) heard that one of the Sherpas of Indian Army expedition had seen Ganner waving hands on 24th. Benegas said all members and Sherpas should have walkie-talkies in order to take rescue operation in time. He also thinks that there must be an arrangement to put up a team of rescue people on the South Col at least during the opening time of ascents that may provide emergency support to climbers as well as to Sherpas. |
