| Route Notes | Horrex, Vrijlandt and Walters started climbing from C2 at 3:30 am of 17th May. Horrex turned around from 2nd Step at about 8:45 am because he felt very tired. Vrijlandt and Walters reached the summit at about 11:30 am of 17th May spent 30 minutes, took photographs. They met Japanese group on the top. While on the summit they talked to BC on radio, enjoyed scenery. Weather was perfect: calm and clear. Two summiters returned to C3 at 3 pm and further went down to C2 at about 6 pm of 17th and spent night over there. Walters does not want to climb again Everest, but Vrijlandt wants to climb again Everest from south side. Walters had snowblind problem for some 2 hours. He found his eyes painful while they started descending. Though he was snowblind he could see a little so he managed to come down to C2. Sherpas from C2 helped him to go down. * Used fixed rope below C3 and there was old rope on various places above C3. While coming down there was new rope fixed by Japanese group which they also used. On 18th and 24th of May Arnold, Dent, Jewell, Le Poole, Newey and Pearson attempted for summit, but due to wind and bad weather they could not go beyond 8500m. Callingham, Cottam and Walker left BC for Kathmandu in mid-April because Callingham and Cottam had altitude problems and Walker had eye hemorrhage. Groenendaal, Le Poole, Newey and Pearson left BC two days before the last group because they had to fly back home. Sherpas waited at C2 as their job was not to go above. Cameraman De Wert reached the bottom of North Col. Vrijlandt used oxygen from C3 until he came down to C2. Walters reached C3 without oxygen, slept with oxygen at C3 and used oxygen to go to summit and to come down to C2. |
