| Route Notes | BC at Chinese BC C1 at North Col High point at bottom of Second Step. 20 May summit party left C3 2:30 am (Chinese time) and arrived Second Step 7:30 am: Juanito, Latorre, Vallejo and Zerain reached this high point. Oscar Cadiach to 8450m and cold [acting as Mallory] and must go back to C3 with slight pneumonia; Bereziartua and Querejeta to 8550m also cold, wind and cloud. Juanito down because weather changed with clouds coming and temperature dropped 10-12 degrees and 35 km/hr winds. "Not possible summit without oxygen - lucky not higher on mountain and when weather changed." 24 May Zerain left ABC for non-stop climb to top but got only to C3 when strong wind stopped him and returned same day to ABC. Juanito to Everest North sans-oxygen. Zerain acted as Irvine and Cadiach as Mallory in bid at 1924 climb. Everest TVE Expedition - 4 June 2000 & 23 Oct 2014, led by Alvaro One member of a Spanish expedition to the north side of Everest in the spring of 2000 wanted to re-enact the 1924 British climb of Everest via North Col route by George Mallory. Oscar Cadiach wore clothing that were exact copies of the clothes worn Geoge Mallory -- made of the same fabrics and designed just like his. The idea was to test their sustainability in the bitter cold at high altitude on Everests. On 20 May 2000, Cadiach reached 8450m, then turned back because he was extremely cold. The 1920's outfit he was wearing did not give enough protection from the weather. He descended to C3 (8350m) with a slight case of pneumonia. |
