Route Notes C1 deposit - not slept in C2 - at North Col C4 - not slept in. First ten days at BC was snowfall. 10th Oct first summit attempt Schuurmans & Dorje Sherpa (sirdar) from C5 up only 50m & then down because of dizziness by Schuurmans; back to C5 for 2 hrs sleep & then ready to try again but Dorje refused. 11th Vermarsenille & Dawa [see below] up from C5 & reached top together with Japanese, who caught up with them. Not very difficult & snow conditions good, but windy; above C5 left ridge for snow field on right of ridge to top. There was very good cooperation among the expeditions "perhaps that is why every expedition had a member on the summit," except the New Zealanders kept to themselves until they needed help with very sick member. Jan 1999 - Dorje Sherpa from Mamerku, Khumbu says Belgians got his name wrong and called him Dawa; he also scaled Cho Oyu with UK teams in spring 1997 and Annapurna I with Korean expedition in Dec 1984 (he had these details right). 24 June 2006 - Dawa from Makalu VDC says that he climbed Dhaulagiri, not Dorje.
