Route Notes BC was established on 6 April, and on the 10th all members except Schletty occupied C1. Schletty had a back problem and had intended to be the BC manager; she went only as far as the base of the icefall. All the remaining members except Hachett occupied C2 on the 25th, but only two members, Beren and Schellens, moved up to C3 on the NE Ridge on 1 May. On the 3rd, the two members went to the right and gained some altitude as they climbed over to the start of the normal final traverse. But now bad weather was making itself felt; it was now snowing almost every afternoon. To get to C3 they had to wade through waist-deep snow, which had been very tiring. At 7500m on the 3rd, they felt "it wasn't going to happen" in Schellens words, and they retreated to C3. But they decided to wait another night. There was no improvement in the weather, so on the 4th they descended to BC. Beren had brought along his skis, and he skied the entire distance from 7500m to BC at 5000m.
