Route Notes C1 at NE Col C2 on NE Ridge under serac C3 on NE Ridge. Himalaya Maestrat to Dhaulagiri I (Ferrer & Morales) - 7 May 2008 After having pitched C1 on the NE Col at about 5900m on 18 April, the team went down to BC to rest. On the 21st they went back to C1 and on the 22nd made C2 at 6750m on the NE Ridge. Again they descended to BC on the 23rd. On 28 April the team left BC for their summit push and were in C3 on the 30th. On 1 May three of them set out for the summit while Pallares, who was not feeling well, remained in C3. The summit party left C3 at 3:00 am, but Ferrer also started feeling unwell at 7700m and returned to C3. Guillen went up to just 7750m with Dario Bracali, leader of the Argentinian expedition, and then, at 7:30 am, Guillens's feet were very cold and he, too, went back to C3, which he reached at 10:00 am. There were now three members in C3, but soon Ferrer and Pallares went down to C1 while Guillen remained in C3 to rest and to wait for Morales to return, and he slept that night in C3. That left just one member, Morales, to continue to the top, which he reached at 3:45 pm. He explained that he climbed slowly because this was his first time on an 8000er, and he was enjoying every moment of his new experience -- "I was very happy," he said twice -- and not bothering to look at his watch; he took his time to enjoy the view and his surroundings and his successful climb. Morales returned to C3 slowly also and was not back in camp until 3:45 am on 2nd May. He felt very fit at the time and had no frostbite. At 9:00 am he and Guillen began their descent from C3. But now Morales was feeling extremely tired -- so very tired that he could hardly stand on his feet. Two Czech climbers, Radek Jaros and Zdenek Hruby, helped him go down to C2 while Guillen, who felt fine, went down ahead of them. Ferrer came up from C1 and met Morales and Czech at 4:00 pm at 6900m. At this time, Guillen, rappelling down, fell from about 30 meters above them; perhaps he was so tired that he didn't clip on properly. He fell down the North Face and his body could not be seen from the ridge. Ferrer and Morales slept in C2 that night and returned to BC on 3 May.
