| Route Notes | C1 at NE Col C2 on NE Ridge C3 on NE Ridge. Kang, Cho Im-Bok and 4 Sherpas left C3 at 2:00 am. Kang's oxygen regulator not functioning 1 hour up from C3 at 7700m, so she and Kami Tshering down to C2; others to top at 5:00 pm without oxygen and slept in C3 on 8:30 pm. Kang used oxygen in C2 to high point to and in C2; had no good training wherea s Choi "very hard training." Weather turned bad with snow fall starting 5 May. Ahn stayed in BC directing climbers entire time; Choi Hong-Gweon had stomach trouble and never went above BC also; Byen, Heo, Mun and Ryu went to C2. Sherpa summiters: Dawa Sherpa, 25/8/60, Makalu-9, Serap Janbu Sherpa, 25/7/69, Khumjung, Everest X1, Kangch X1, Cho Oyu X2, etc Pema Tshering Sherpa, 1/6/70, Makalu-9, Everest X2 Choi - 12 May 2005: At summit was snow and rock only; later he said there was a one-meter tall pole and Sherpas said this was highest point. Peter Guggemos - 11 May 2005 On fore-summit (8120m) is aluminum pole standing up; on highest summit is a German's body. Mrs Nives Meroi - 23 May 2005 Meroi, Benet and Vuerich (Italian expedition) followed Korean's footsteps till they stopped and turned back 100m below pole on fore-summit, which is at 8120m. Koreans did not reach highest summit. Dawa Sherpa - 29 December 2005 Dawa Sherpa in an interview with Liz Hawley reconfirmed that the Korean team did reach the main summit. He said their team did not stay on the NE Ridge beyond the fore-summit (which would be "too difficult"), but traversed onto the N Face and then climbed to the main summit. He saw on the main summit a white pole (about 2m high), but no prayer flags. Liz showed Dawa a picture of the summit ridge area and he traced with his finger their route traversing onto the N Face before getting to the top, which is the correct way to get there. |
