| Route Notes | John Hunt - 20 Nov 81 "Quite a joy to be on a peak of that might without any altitude problems." BC at 15,000 ft 6 Nov, higher camp at 17,500 ft 7 Nov. On top on 8 Nov after 4 hours from higher camp by Lord and Lady Hunt, Michael and Sally Westmacott, Alan Wedgemold and Janet Westmacott, Hamish Nicol. Perfect day regarding weather with no wind to speak. Snow and ice, 55 degrees some of it on West Ridge of Chulu East. Little technical difficulty. No fixed rope. Very low temperature. Last year in Karakorum also climbed with multinational scientific expedition; went only 16,000 ft. Last camp altitude reached 19 years agao by Hunt in Pamirs on Concord Peak in 1st ascent just 19,000 ft. Anglo-Soviet expedition led by Hunt. Absolutely wind by time got to top. This time on Chulu much less so. Another climb like this? "there has always got to be a last time." |
