Route Notes BC at road head ABC same as others C1 same as others C3 sleeping bag only (no tent). Made biv at 7500m because of deep snow conditions. Left for top at midnight (NST) with Koreans, Japanese and 2 French (Muller's team) from C3 and on top 2:00 pm (French not to top). Conditions quite difficult and breaking trail through thigh-deep snow. Sherpas did most of breaking trail after halfway to top, when Koreans and Japanese did not have strength to continue this tough work. When got to "top" clouds suddenly came in, could not see Everest, et al - believes he was 1-2 vertical meters and maybe 40m short of it. Koreans stopped 50m from top in clear view and took so many pix had no time to go on towards top, maybe 2m vertically below top. McGuinness to C2 for the night; arrived there 5:00 pm. 13 Oct 99 - Brad Johnson, who summitted 27th, went beyond tracks of 26th summiters and believes they were only about 10 vertical meters short of top.
