Route Notes 1st summit bid on 1st by Sarapuu and Riga from C3 but turned back after 100m gained because couldn't see well in dark at 4:00 am 1:45 NST (headlamp not working), strong wind, track of others footprints lost in new snow; returned to C3 and on 2nd altitude down to ABC. Same pair left 6 Oct from ABC to C1, 7th to C2 and 8th to C3 and 9th top. 9th left C3 2:45 NST on top 10:45 am, saw Everest - snow deep on plateau. Returned to C3 about 11:30 by Riga, who was in hurry with freezing toes and 1:00 by Sarapuu, who took pix - summiters stayed 10th also in C3 because tents to leave any in C1. 6 members tried for top on 11 Oct and 3 turned back (Suuk altitude sickness, Lai too late, Kunnap tired and cold) while Proos, Plummer and Sarmet went to top behind Germans and with them. Sue Fear - 3 Oct 98: This was "poorest expedition I've ever seen" - no mess [tent], ate standing in the snow eating from tins. Had some heavy Soviet equipment, but were very generous, hospitable people.
Accidents Suuk altitude sickness; Riga bronchitis (went to Tingri)
Achievement Claims 1st Estonian ascent since first person with Estonian citizenship (Aleksei Kovaltchuk) was Ukranian or Russian ethnically (23 Sept 96)
