Route Notes ABC lower than normal site because yaks couldn't reach it C1 at normal site. 1st summit party went to top from C3 and slept in C2 that night. 2nd party from C2 to top and down to C2 same day; both really strong and fast. Everything went very smoothly on the mountain amongst the many expeditions but it was in base camp that problems arose with expeditions with no transport of their own or oxygen and they wanted these from Simonson's team, the only one which had its own vehicle at BC. Ellis says he very conscious of being representatives of blacks and making probably the first ascent of any 8000er by black - is active in Afro-American affairs. Summit Sherpa: Dawa Nuru from Phortse for whom this his 3rd ascent of Cho Oyu. Johnson, Simonson, Rayner and Matheson were essentially just trekkers who left exedition on 24th April as planned, but Matheson reached C1 and Simonson only BC.
