Route Notes BC same as Germans and Basques (true Kangchung) ABC deposit east of Pt 6177m C2 north of Nangpa La near go of Gyabrag C2 east of Pt 6556m. In Nov 92 asked to be included on Basque's permit but as independent party and arrived KTM on 27th March; Asian Treking arranged Sherpas: 1 climbing Sherpa, (Pemba), 1 cook and 1 kitchen boy and had his own gear of 500 kg tents, food, etc. (carried by 10 yaks). Left KTM 2nd April to Lukla; made deposit of Nangpa La and slept there 3-4 days and then across Nangpa La to C1; spent 3 nights at C1 and on 25th went to put new camp but made deposit only because snowfall; was at 6600m, higher ten Italians camp. All down from C2 (including Italians, Taiwanese and British as well as Basques and Germans) because snowfall. 26th Pemba to BC to rest from stomach trouble and headache, etc. while Ibanez stayed C1. 27th Ibanez from C1 to C2 and at icefall at narrow entrance to plateau where C2 was at noon saw 2 Chinese in uniforms with rifles. Only 12-15 meters from him but concentrating on Germans, whom they were very angry with so did not pay attention to Ibanez. Ibanez turned back and back to C1 to tell others about PLA and wait for Germans to explain what happened; did not go up again. Swiss had complained to Chinese - he did not go up because Swiss were on mountain (Swiss had met Germans on 28th and then complained to Chinese).
Accidents Pemba stomach trouble; cook serious altitude sickness
