Route Notes 1st attempt from C3 on 12 Sept; had waited few days for slower members to acclimatize and then 2 days bad weather. Left BC 9 Sept with half of group; 10th stayed extra day again C2; 12th first team on top. 13th second team from C3 to C4; 14th second team to top. Not difficult climb (easier than Gasherbrum II and Xixabangma) when much snow but snow may be dangerous when wind slabs are exposed. Cormier parapented from start of summit plateau (8100m) to 5900m. Gouvy and Perillat glacier surfed (single ski but not mono-ski) from summit to C1 at end of snow very quickly. Mono ski and short-alpine skier Bovero died suddenly of pulmonary edema in his tent at Everest BC while on acclimatization trek before climb. Brumo Cormier - 19 Sept 88 Cormier arrived KTM today, Jaccoux and others on 24th eve (except Vincent) Cormier flew by hang-glider on 12 Sept 7 people on summit 14 Sept 5 --- 12 = 2 guides 3 Sherpas 7 clients Also on 14 Sept two Italians on top 4 frostbite cases and 1 dead at Everest BC
Accidents 5 frostbite cases (very cold and windy since Sept 8); serious 1 toe and 1 fingertips; one dead before BC
