Route Notes 1st BC at 5400m at Summa Glacier, S of Nangpai Gosum 2nd BC at 5400m below Nangpa between g+p of Nangpa Glacier on Schneider map ABC at 6000m at same site as ABC of 1986 spr Polish-Swiss-Australia C1 at top of scree C2 below icefall C3 above all icefall C4 at 7600m at summit slope. Had permit for SW Ridge and went up Summa glacier to have look at but rock wall above 7000m looked too difficult as an approach; so crossed col to west and made new base at normal BC site below Nangpa La. 30 Apr two climbers [Sterritt and Morris] set out from C4 with Walsh; Sterrit reached very little higher before altitude sickness sent him back to C4; Morris went on 200-300m more because of altitude making him go very slowly; hoped to go to top on 1 May but in fact descended next day with slight frostbite. Walsh summited on 30 Apr. Alan Hunt failed to acclimatize and went home early. Sirdar also ill from altitude after having gone to C4 quickly (a young Sherpa). Team had hoped to ski the mountain, but too much ice so skis not used past ABC. LO with expeditions from Tibet normally stay well down and want to know about teams from south only if these present a problem to leaders from north, according to climbers on Cho Oyu at same time as British. Schmatz, German Cho Oyu - 23 May 1988 Stefan Woerner of Germany-Swiss Cho Oyu from Nepal helped 2 British members when they were badly confused by effects of attitude.
