Route Notes Clemenson left Renard at BC on 11 or 12 Sept very early in morning leaving note in his tent saying not motivated; had conquest in 1984. Now Clemenson tells police he never saw Renard before and did not go to Nepal with him, has not repaid Renard for air ticket. Clemenson agreed to go to Cho Oyu with Renard: Renard did not want to climb alone and did not know Ang Rinji would join him and Clemenson had already been to summit so knew the mountain and was happy to return. Renard paid his airfare in the rush of departure but all other expenses shared equally between them. Renard skied down from summit to 6200m (C1). They had no permit for Cho Oyu. Michel Vincent - 13 Aug 88 Tierry Renard did not reach Cho Oyu summit in 1987. Vincent knows he has been closely questioned about this and Japanese wrote letter saying they did not see him near summit on 21 Sept. Renard had one Sherpa and one Frenchman (name unknown) with him at BC and one climbing Sherpa who did not go to summit. French had no permit for climb. Renard, who did ski descent of Gasherbrum II in 1985, claimed to have skied down Cho Oyu on this climb, but Japanese saw him descending much of route on foot: they believe he skied only from C2 to C1.
