Route Notes Gardzielewski and Kochanczyk - 5 June 85 Chinese BC base at Dzapoma according to 2 Swiss geologists who have been there. Poles found 18 broken and unbroken Chinese antique-type ice axes and much fixed rope. On top found Chinese al snow, many prayer flags and amulets and on top of stake was metal Chinese flag (near one star was photo of Spanish girl) and red sack containing 2 Chinese notes. Also yellow oxygen bottles similar to found in Chinese C2 (French make). On top rack hammer and pitons, poles left flag on top. Chinese C1 was Spanish C1 1985 Spring C2 very near Spanish C2 - 6350m C3 (French oxygen bottle found here) C4 full sack of tsampa and other food remnants including many fresh meat bones - 7050m. Poles Biv4, Spaniards C3 Any higher Chinese camp not found. Probably used slightly different route to top. Garayoa and Uriarte - June 3, 85 The Chinese approached Cho Oyu via the Gyabrag Glacier from the north and then followed the same route via West Ridge-West Face, the normal route, as the Spaniards also followed. The Spanish Basques found the Chinese Tibetans fixed ropes and broken Chinese made ice axes along the route. On the summit they found a small metal Chinese flag, a red rectangle with seven gold stars. The Basques did not actually see the Tibetans themselves, the Basques said. They were busy at base camp and deposit camp until early May, by which time the Tibetans had left the mountain. (Very probably the Basques were actually lying low until the Tibetans finished their climb so that the Basques would not be seen by Chinese to have crossed the border into Tibet). Random pages from Chinese book on Tibetan Cho Oyu Expedition Spring 1985 The others, led by team leader Renqing Pingcuo, bore in mind the trust placed in them by people throughout the country and the Autonomous region. They encouraged one another by means of brief speech or gesture when they came to the end of a long ice and snow slope, the nine mounaineers were surprised to find light ahead and no more height was in sight. What they saw was cloud under their feet and blue sky emerging above. At 17:50 hours CST (15:35 NST) the nine Tibetan alpinists successfully, ascended the world's sixth highest mountain and planted the five star flag atop it. Renqing Pingcuo reported in ultra short wave walkie-talkie. The other members took photos, collected specimens and mark inscribed with the words "The Tibetan Mountaineering Expedition" and the design of the five star flag. After remaining atop for half an hour, the nine summiters brimming with victory and lofty sentiments, descended. Night set in when they were on their way home. They could rely on the white ice and snow and the dim moonlight to find their way back to the assault camp. With help from their fellow members, they returned to the base camp in safety.
