Route Notes BC at Lungsampa Glacier. west of point 6066m (not at originally planned site because icefall of Ngojumba Glacier "looked absolutely appalling"). By C4 time, was just Jackson and Priestman high and they kept going in series of bivies. 3rd biv was highest point but on 17th May pushed along E Ridge to point where "terrific gully system stretching down into Tibet which was completely impossible to pass in any way." Took 3 hours to get there, halfway to top until impass reached. To get around it, would have to descend 2000m into Tibet, so gave up. Top of face was 70-degree ice. Above C3 went up on arrete to avoid ice wall in quite hard climb. At impass point loose rock very steep. Priestman tried to solo round it but no go and got some frostbite in the attempt. Looked very straightforward.
Accidents 1 Sherpa very ill with kidney stone; Findley and Harrison never acclimatized; Monks didn't acclimatize and became really ill at C4; Bradey ill off and on; Priestman frostbitten toe which he lost a bit of
Achievement Terminated just below summit of Ngojumba Kang I
