| Route Notes | Seven Summit Treks Cho Oyu expedition was a combination of several independent teams (1-2 climbers each). Seven Summits provided transportation, base camp facilities and various levels of high-altitude support (oxygen, high-altitude porters, tents, etc) as required and contracted for by each team. The individual accounts for each team are given below: Juho Sarkila (Finland) Camps: BC(13/09,5000m),ABC(15/09,5700m),C1(20/09,6400m),C1.5(27/09,6800m), C2(02/10,7095m),C3(03/10,7350m),Smt(04/10) Left: 07/10/2016 Hired: 0 Term: Success (11 am CST, 8:45 am NST) Sarkila left C3 at 3:50 am CST. Straightforward climb. He spent about 5 minutes on the summit and descended to C2, where he arrived at 4:30 pm. On 05 Oct to ABC. Sarkila had brought his skis and had taken them to C2. However, he never used his skis as he thought he would have a better chance to summit without them. Arjun Vajpai (India) Camps: BC(13/09,5000m),ABC(15/09,5700m),C1(26/09,6400m),C2(02/10,7140m), C3(03/10,7350m),Smt(04/10) Left: 07/10/2016 Hired: 2 Term: Success (6:35 am) Summit team left C3 at 1:45 am. The big Chinese team was in front of them, but did not get in their way. They spent about 10 minutes on the summit. No view. They descended to ABC, where they arrived at 2 pm. Oxygen: Taken and used from C2 to top to C2 by Vajpai; from C3 to top to C2 by Sherpas Sherpas: Pasang Norbu Sherpa (on Makalu with Vajpai in 2016) Lhakpa Sherpa Mark Quinn (Ireland) Camps: BC(23/09,5000m),ABC(24/09,5700m),xxx(29/06,5900m) Left: 07/10/2016 Hired: 0 Term: Not enough time to acclimatize Reason for abandoning the expedition: Not enough time to acclimatize. Quinn was not allowed into China before 20 Sept due to Pakistani visa in passport. Yuji Fukushima (Japan) Camps: BC(12/09,5000m),ABC(15/09,5700m),C1(20/09,6400m),C2(30/10,7095m), xxx(01/10,7500m) Left: 07/10/2016 Hired: 1 Term: Success (10:35 am) Fukushima was on his summit push; however, when he reached 7500m he ran out of stamina and turned back to C2. Phunjo Lama (Nepal) Camps: BC(13/09,5000m),ABC(15/09,5700m),C1(26/09,6400m),C2(30/10,7140m), C2(01/10,7350m),Smt(02/10) Left: 05/10/2016 Hired: 0 Term: Success (7:30 am) Lama left C3 at 11:30 pm on 01 Oct. Straightforward climb. Spent 10 minutes on the summit and descended to ABC at 3:30 pm. Wilco van Rooijen (Netherlands) Caspar van de Gevel (Netherlands) Camps: BC(13/09,5000m),ABC(15/09,5700m),C1(18/09,6400m),C1.5(23/09,6800m), C2(24/09,7140m),C3(03/10,7350m),Smt(04/10) Left: 07/10/2016 Hired: 0 Term: Success (10 am CST, 8:45 am NST) Team left C3 at 2:45 am CST. It was very cold but clear. When they were going up the Chinese team was descending. They spent about 10 minutes on the summit and descended to C2, where they arrived at 2 pm. The following day they descended to ABC. Graciela Flor Cuenca Blas (Peru) Camps: BC(13/09,5000m),ABC(15/09,5700m),C1(26/09,6400m),C1.5(27/09,6800m), C2(30/09,7140m),C3(01/10,7350m),Smt(02/10) Left: 07/10/2016 Hired: 0 Term: Success (10:35 am CST, 8:20 am NST Cuenca left C3 at 4:20 am CST on 01 Oct. She was initially going to climb with Victor Rimac, however, she joined up with the IMG group for that day. Straightforward climb. She spent 40 minutes on the summit and descended to C2, where she arrived at 2 pm. Next day descended to ABC. She was the first Peruvian woman to summit Cho Oyu. Victor Rimac (Peru) Camps: BC(13/09,5000m),ABC(15/09,5700m),C1(26/09,6400m),C1.5(27/09,6800m), C2(7140m),C3(7350m),Smt(30/09) Left: 07/10/2016 Hired: 0 Term: Success (13:30 pm CST, 11:15 am NST Rimac left ABC at 1:30 pm CST on 29 Oct. He stopped at C1 to change his boots. He spent about one hour there and then carried on to C2, where he arrived at 8 pm. He had deposited his gear at C2, but could no longer find it. He looked around and could not find it. At 1 am he decided to borrow some gear from his Spanish friends from Thamserku Trekking and carried on to the summit. He spent 45 minutes on the summit and descended to C2 where he arrived at 5 pm. The next day ABC. |
