Route Notes BC at Chinese BC (BC for normal route) ABC at normal ABC C1 at last of the moraine at bottom of SW Face High point on SW Face. The team of three Italians and no Sherpas moved up on 26th September from C1, which had been established at the bottom of the SW Face, to deposit gear at 6600m and next day to leave gear at 6680m, then descended to ABC. On 1 October, they again left ABC and climbed to C1. On the 2nd, Nones went alone to 7000m and slept there while Nocker retreated to BC with pulmonary edema and Macaluso remained in C1. On 3 October, Nones emerged from his tent at 10:00 am into strong wind and perhaps was blown off his feet. (He had not yet put on his crampons). Whatever the cause, he fell, somersaulting 700m down the mountain to 6300m to the right side of C1 and their line of ascent. Macaluso, in C1, did not see Nones fall, but he could see Nones' body, and when he went to it, found it badly smashed. Macaluso went down to ABC, which was the ABC for climbers on the normal northwest-side route also, to seek help in recovering Nones' body. Three volunteered; one was the Italian, Ms Tamara Lunger, who was one-woman expedition. They placed it in a plastic bag and brought it down from the area of ice and snow to 6100m from which Tibetans without crampons could carry it to ABC on 4 November. Macaluso brought Nones' body on the 5th from ABC to Nylam and next day to Kathmandu. On the 7th it was cremated at the Swayambhunath stupa in Kathmandu.
Accidents Fatal fall by Nones; Nocker's edema
