Route Notes Latvian Cho Oyu Expedition - 14 Oct 2000 The three members Atis Plakans (leader), wife Liga Plakane, and Kaspars Klapkalns, left C3 for the summit on 9 Oct at 5:45 am. They had waited for the sunrise for a little warmth from the sun and for the wind to die, as it did at sunrise. Klapkalns reached the summit at 3:30 pm. He was an hour ahead of his teammates because he had started to use oxygen at 8000m whereas they were using none. They saw the tops of Everest and Lhotse and as they moved forward the more and more of the two mountains were visible. They returned to C3 at 6:00 pm (Klapkalns, still on oxygen) and 7:15 pm (the others). Mrs Plakane was the first Latvian woman to reach any 8000m summit. They spent the nights of the 8th and 9th in C3. On the 10th they arrived at ABC after dark, at 6:30 pm (Plakane and Plakans) and 7:30 pm (Klapkalns). Oxygen used only by Klapkalns from 8000m to the summit to C3. The others never used any.
