Route Notes ABC at 5750m high camp C3 at 7500m had tent not slept in. Summit party of 27 Sept left C2 for top at 11:30 pm 26th, on top 12:45 pm, returned to C2 at 6:00 pm; saw Everest, Lhotse, etc. Summit party of 5 Oct left C2 at midnight, on top at 5:00 pm by Tsiantos and Pasang Gyalzen who then returned to C2 5:00 pm. Barouchas and Sona Dendu reached top at 6:00 pm, saw Everest, etc., then very strong wind blowing so had stayed one hour in tiny tent at 7500m. Barouchas climbing slowly because "not good condition," but would not listen to Sona Dendu's advice and insisted "very important" for him to get to summit. Barouchas reached Japanese tent at midnight with Sona Dendu, who says Barouchas was Ok, and who himself (Sona Dendu) went on down to C2 alone and reached C2 at 11:30 am with frostbitten toes. Barouchas arrived at C2 with a Japanese, whose tent he had stayed in at 12:30 pm 6th. Barouchas stayed in C2 for 2 hours, drinking water and tea, talking Ok; Mingma brought up a bottle of oxygen for him and at 1:30 pm, when it arrived, started to go down again with all of the summit team, but descended only, 100m, stopped, was exhausted. Tent was brought there and he was put inside it, but suddenly he didn't move or talk. Tsiantos went outside tent to secure it and he he went back inside after 5-10 minutes, found Barouchas had no vital signs. 4 Sherpas brought body down the mountain, which was brought to KTM with members on 9 Oct and on 10 Oct was being flown to Greece. Teammates may stick to expedition's plan to go to Everest (south side) in spring 2004.
