Route Notes No C3 because bad weather prevented going this high quickly: snow at lower altitude and strong winds higher. 30 Sept first day anyone summited. All members tried for top on 30th and all used oxygen (Hunt had used it night before). Most going too slowly to summit: Brand, Harper, Hunt and Robinson and Brice turned back at small peak just on plateau. Summit members used oxygen to top and back (most used all the way back to C2); Sherpas used none at all. Summit Sherpas: Chuldin Temba, Zorak, 1963, Everest X2, Cho Oyu X1 Karsang Namgel, Thami, 1971, Cho Oyu X2, Everest X4 Lobsang Temba, Khumjung, 1968, Everest X3, Cho Oyu X2 Chinese army at ABC: sometime around 21-23 Sept, 3 Chinese army (PLA) soldiers were searching for a group of about 20 Tibetans from Amdo. PLA found woman lying on ground as a decoy and when they went to look at her, they were attacked by Amdos hitting them over the head with rocks; Amdos chased them (1 was Han Chinese and other 2 Tibetans). On the following day - following night, 2 Tibetans soldiers returned to Cho Oyu ABC and slept in one of Brice's tents; they had no sleeping bags, food, warm clothing. On 3rd day, 15-20 more Chinese soldiers came to ABC also looking for the Amdos; some reached the moraine, some went to Nangpa La and returned to ABC; 3 stayed in Brice's tent, the rest in tents of the Joint Japanese-Chinese expedition. On 4th day they all went back to their base at Base Camp. Later that morning, shots were heard at ABC, they were fired by the Han Chinese soldier in the first trio: he was crawling, dragging himself through the snow and firing to call attention to himself. Brice and the Tibetan "Sherpas" with the Japanese-Chinese expedition went to him and brought him to Japanese-Chinese tent at ABC. He had picked up again and cartridge was empty; no foreigners at ABC went out to help; only Brice and Sherpas and Japanese-Chinese "Sherpas" came out. Perhaps the Americans on an expedition to Nagpai Gosum were shot at by Amdos in crossfire with PLA.
