Route Notes BC at common BC site C1 20m below a ridge C2 above some crevasses High point at C2 site. The last second attempt by both members about April 25 reached up to C2. Weather was bad in the second half of April. Then the members had to leave. Osterbauer requests list of all ascents of Cho Oyu. Email to Mr. Jeevan Shrestha - June 24, 2002 We reached Chinese basecamp on the 8th of April after spending nights in Zangmu, Nyalam (2 nights) and Tingri. Basecamp was reached 3 days later on the 11th after spending two nights in the Chinese basecamp and one night on the way. 17th to 18th of April we spent our first night in C1 and on the 18th we reached C2 for the first time, building up one tent and climbed down to C1, where we spend the night again (weather conditions were rather poor that night...). The next days it was very stormy and the Koreans in camp two said that most of the tents there were blown away by the wind. So from that moment on, we were not sure of it, there was still our tent in C2 or not. Anyway, when the weather seemed to be better a few days later, we climbed to C1 again on the 24th and spent one more night there. As the weather report given by Mr Gabi from Austria was good we decided to climb to C2 the next day (25th) to try the summit the following night/day. But 5 hours after this weather report we found ourselves in C2 (our tent was still there) in real bad weather (storm, snowfall, sight approx. 20 meters). This was the reason why we decided not to spend the night in C2, but try to find our way back to C1 (which was not too easy!). It was obvious that the next day would be no "summit day". So we never "used" camp 2 for sleeping. Well, I think this should be all the information that you need, but if you still miss something, don't hesitate to contact me again.
