| Route Notes | From ABC to C2 on 8 May. 9 May 6:00 am, only 3 towards top and reached top: Nicolini and Mezzanotte at 1:30 pm, Moro after phone call in national radio and TV. All 3 saw Everest, etc and back to ABC at 7:30 pm same day. Moschetti and Stefani made summit bid from C2; Stefani to 7500m, Moschetti at 8000m [7800m according to Moro web report]. Stefani tired and Moschetti stopped because so cloudy could not see how to proceed since fixed ropes ended here; slept in C2 and 12 May in ABC. Illness: 1 member Omar Oprandi never went above BC because of pulmonary edema and left expedition to go home 19 April; Sandro Vidi also developed pulmonary edema in C1 and left to go home about 2 May. Source of above information: Moro May 8: Mezzanotte, Moro and Nicolini started from ABC at 08:30 hours - C2 at 1300 hours. May 9 started at 06:30 hours. Summit at 13:30 hours by 2 members. Spent about 20 minutes. Returned to ABC at 20:00 hours. Moro reached to summit at 14:30 hours. For Mezzanottte and Nicolini from ABC to summit was 11-1/2 hours. Both of them are "Ski Alpine Champion - European" held on April 2002 in Sorce Chanelier in France. The expedition pitched 2 tents at C1 and 1 tent at C2 (May 1). The acclimatization: members started from ABC one day, to C1 and C2, back to ABC for rest. Then to Tingri, rest one or two days. Again to ABC to C1. Nicolini had left a camel bag with tea inside at the summit. Curnis and Moro left ABC on 10th for Everest BC. Sandro Vidi left ABC on May 5 not feeling well; left Nepal on May 15th. Oprandi in Tingri on April 16. He might have left Nepal on 17th. Summit day: Nicolini and Mezzanotte saw Everests summit weather was good but windy. May 10: Moschetti reached up to 8100m, but had to return due to poor visibility. Source of above information: Mezzanotte, Nicolini and Stefani who speaks English. |
