| Route Notes | High point at 7900m at face where snow stops and rock to top. Arrived at Cho Oyu after good acclimatization on Mera and Xixabangma. Direct route above C3 to top. Route was difficult for at least to 7800m, steep rock on this more direct. Lot of unconsolidated snow on loose rock. 19 May started from C3 4:00 am NST for top but at 10:00 am turned back becasue very tired. Had short falls coming down because of weariness, down to C2 to sleep. 20th down to ABC and now no more time to recover and try again. Very strong wind on 20th made descent a real battle. Had planned to make only one summit bid and by 19th his disabled knee from earlier accident was giving him trouble and this was the largest single cause of giving up. |
