Route Notes BC at snow-covered grass north side of Tsho Rolpa C1 at bottom of SW Face High point at C1. The two-man team arrived at BC on 16 November and rested there that day. On the 17th, snow began to fall, and they retreated to the village of Na, two hours west of BC, which was at the west end of a sizeable lake called Tsho Rolpa. Twenty centimeters of snow fell that day at BC. They returned to the camp on the 18th. Gruener had some kind of nose and throat problems, so he never went above BC. That left Staffler to climb alone. Their plan had been to climb their 6685m mountain in what they called pure alpine style from one high camp. Staffler placed this camp at 5500m with one Sherpa, Lhakpa Nuru, to carry the load there. They pitched C1 on 19 November, then Lhakpa Nuru descended immediately to BC while Staffler slept there alone. Staffler decided on the 19th to abandon the climb. Why? "Because I was alone." A Sherpa going to the summit with him violated the true "alpine style" he believed in. Staffler returned to BC on the 20th, and they all left BC the same day. Sherpas: Lhakpa Nuru, 22/11/80, Thami, Everest X5
