| Route Notes | Asmus Norreslet - 6 June 2005 (by email to Richard Salisbury) Here is some information about our Tsoboje climb: Tsoboje: 4-7/11-2002 1st day: 4/11. We are climbing the base of the mountain starting out from camp at 8:30, reaching the top of the base at 15:00. The base that starts in 4500m consists of a lot of easy ground. To start with we had to climb runnels of grass, then scrambling on big blocks, we encountered a few pitches of climbing at 3-4 grade. The base of the climb is about 900m high. From here there is a small glacier/neve up to the steep headwall that starts around 5600m. The first day we went up and fixed two rope lengths. We saw pitons and old frayed ropes on these pitches. We went back to our bivi 17:00. 2nd day: 5/11. Leaving the bivi just before 8 o'clock. At 16:00 we found our 2nd bivi site just at the start of the final snow ridge around 6100m. This second day we did about 10-12 pitches of climbing up to grade 4+, and in the end 3 pitches of mixed climbing to reach the final snow ridge. On the way we found some evidence of previous attempts/climb. The ridge is sharp and without many bivi-sites. We rappelled down on the side to did out a platform underneath a cornice. 3rd day: 6/11. SUMMIT. Start just before 7 o'clock, reaching the summit around 11 o'clock. The ridge to the summit is steep, with a little rock step just above the bivouac of maybe 2 grade, the ridge were with a few cornices but not too bad. We climbed back down the ridge and reached our bivouac at about 14:00. We stayed in the bivouac for the night. 4th day: 6/12. Start 7 o'clock, down below the base of the climb 14:00. We have decided to try and go down by the face instead of coming back down the same way as up. It would be a lot of rappelling, loose rock.......not the best plan. On the photo you can see our descent route. It involves reaching the top of the hanging glacier (serac) traversing the face, up and over runnels, using ice screws as protection, reaching easier angled slopes further to the right of the face (looking down). From here we found our way down the right side of the glacier, did a rappel in the rocks to get over a steep rock step, leaving an piton anchor (that is the only gear we left on the mountain). The grade of the climb would be V/TD, 2200m |
